The 2008 Provincial Budget confirmed that $100 million will be made available to the social housing sector for repairs to housing and another $500 million in low-cost loans will also be available through the Ontario Strategic Infrastructure Financing Authority (OSIFA).

Mark your calendars! North House is hosting a one day conference, on April 24, 2008 on Housing Strategies for Small Towns and Rural Communities. Housing providers, community leaders, workers and representatives from all government levels are invited to hear presentations and participate in workshops on topics such as WrapAround, Funding, Poverty and Planning. The event will be held at the Mississauga's of Scugog Island First Nation Community Hall, Port Perry. More details are available on the North House website.
The Province has announced programs to launch its Poverty Reduction Strategy which includes funding for the repair of social housing - a top priority which ONPHA has been messaging to the government. Read the release, backgrounder and ONPHA's reaction.

ONPHA has joined with its members and and sector partners urging the Premier to fund the repair of social housing by creating a social housing capital financing facility. The joint sector letter calls for funds towards this to be included in the next provincial budget scheduled for mid March.
There is little doubt that housing plays a key role in poverty prevention and reduction. ONPHA recently commissioned a paper to examine these roles, the international experience and implications for Ontario. The paper also examines how income assistance programs like Ontario Works and housing issues are not properly aligned. ONPHA plans to present the paper to Cabinet Committee created to develop Ontario's poverty reduction strategy.
